Japanese hair straightening, also known as the Yuko System, is a permanent hair straightening technique developed in Japan by Japanese hairstylist Yuko Yamashita in 1996.
Japanese hair straightening belongs to the category of permanent straightening treatments. Unlike harsh relaxing methods that damage the hair fiber, this technique works by softening and restructuring the hair to create long-lasting smoothness for up to 12 months, depending on the nature of the hair.
Considered a permanent hair relaxing technique, Japanese straightening works deep within the hair fiber by modifying its internal structure. Once the treatment is complete, the hair becomes exceptionally smooth, straight, silky, and easy to manage.
Japanese Hair Straightening vs Brazilian Blowout: What’s the Difference?
The main difference between Japanese hair straightening and Brazilian straightening lies in the technique itself.
Japanese straightening permanently alters the structure of the hair to create a long-lasting straight effect, while a Brazilian blowout acts more like a conditioning treatment that coats the hair fiber to make it appear smoother and shinier temporarily.
Far more effective for achieving truly straight hair, Japanese straightening uses a treatment highly concentrated in silk proteins and free from harsh damaging chemicals. These silk proteins have a softening effect on the hair.
Thanks to their low molecular weight, the amino acids contained in silk proteins penetrate deeply into the hair cuticle and help maintain the hair’s natural hydration.
How Does Japanese Hair Straightening Work?
First, the hair is thoroughly cleansed to remove impurities and then carefully dried.
Next, the straightening solution is applied. This product works by relaxing the natural structure of the hair without making it stiff or damaging it. Depending on the hair type and texture, the processing time may vary between 10 and 45 minutes.
Once the processing time is complete, the hair is carefully rinsed, dried, and then straightened using heated flat irons. This step activates the treatment and helps the product penetrate deeply into the hair fiber.
Afterward, a neutralizing milk is applied throughout the hair and left on for around fifteen minutes.
Finally, after a third and final shampoo, the hair is dried and styled again. The result is incredibly smooth, shiny hair that can last from 6 to 12 months depending on your hair type.
Important Aftercare Advice
To maintain the straightening result properly, it is essential not to touch or tie the hair for 48 hours after the treatment.
For 48 hours:
No shampoo
No hair clips
No ponytails or hair ties
No accessories that could bend the hair
If the hair accidentally gets wet (rain, humidity, etc.), a quick pass with a flat iron will usually restore the smooth finish.
